چکیده

17 Remote sensing (RS) data are an alternative to in-situ hydrometeorological data in 18 remote and poorly monitored areas and are increasingly used in hydrological 19 modeling. This study presents a lumped, conceptual, river basin water balance 20 modeling approach based entirely on RS data: precipitation was obtained from the 21 Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis 22 (TMPA), temperature from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast 23 (ECMWF) global reanalysis dataset and evapotranspiration was derived from 24 temperature data. The Ensemble Kalman Filter was used to assimilate radar altimetry 25 2 (ERS2 and Envisat) measurements of reservoir water surface elevations. The 26 modeling approach is applied to the Syr Darya River Basin, a primarily snowmelt 27 driven basin with large topographical variability and scarce meteorological data that is 28 shared between 4 countries with conflicting water management interests. 29 Assimilation of radar altimetry data improved model results significantly. Without 30 data assimilation, model performance was limited, probably because of the size and 31 complexity of the model domain, simplifications inherent in model design, and the 32 uncertainty of RS data. Data assimilation reduced the mean of the reservoir water 33 surface level residuals from 19.5 to 4.5 meters, and model root mean square error 34 from 16.7 meters to 6.4 meters. 35 By providing an impartial source of information about the hydrological system that 36 can be updated in real time, the modeling approach described here could provide 37 useful hydrological forecast information that could be updated at time scales 38 appropriate for decision-making. The approach has potential to facilitate cooperation 39 in transboundary basins with conflicting management objectives. 40 41

Monitoring Water Levels and Discharges Using Radar Altimetry in an Ungauged River Basin: The Case of the Ogooué

Radar altimetry is now commonly used for the monitoring of water levels in large river basins. In this study, an altimetry-based network of virtual stations was defined in the quasi ungauged Ogooué river basin, located in Gabon, Central Africa, using data from seven altimetry missions (Jason-2 and 3, ERS-2, ENVISAT, Cryosat-2, SARAL, Sentinel-3A) from 1995 to 2017. The performance of the five l...

Assessment of the Impact of Reservoirs in the Upper Mekong River Using Satellite Radar Altimetry and Remote Sensing Imageries

Water level (WL) and water volume (WV) of surface-water bodies are among the most crucial variables used in water-resources assessment and management. They fluctuate as a result of climatic forcing, and they are considered as indicators of climatic impacts on water resources. Quantifying riverine WL and WV, however, usually requires the availability of timely and continuous in situ data, which ...

Floodplain Water Storage in the Negro River Basin Estimated from Microwave Remote Sensing of Inundation Area and Water Levels

The objective of this study is to determine spatio-temporal variations of water volume over inundated areas located in large river basins using combined observations from the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) onboard the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS1), the Topex/Poseidon (T/P) altimetry satellite, and in-situ hydrographic stations. Ultimately, the goal is to quantify the role of floodp...

Water Level Fluctuations in the Congo Basin Derived from ENVISAT Satellite Altimetry

In the Congo Basin, the elevated vulnerability of food security and the water supply implies that sustainable development strategies must incorporate the effects of climate change on hydrological regimes. However, the lack of observational hydro-climatic data over the past decades strongly limits the number of studies investigating the effects of climate change in the Congo Basin. We present th...

Flood hazard zones using 2d hydrodynamic modeling and remote sensing approaches

Increasing frequency and severity of flooding demands identification of flood hazard zones in Kalilangan, Bukidnon in response to the echoing need of better disaster preparedness via enhancing the understanding and awareness of the public on flood characteristics by integrating the use of two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling and remote sensing. Flood simulation was carried out in a two-dimensi...
